So I was preparing this very scientific test
to compare all these generic seven different capture devices
against the gold standard of capture devices which is
the salgado cam link if you'd ask me.
And while I was unpacking and running all these tests actually discovered
something about these devices that made me just rethink my entire plan because
the truth is that actually most of these devices that you can
buy for roughly 20 to $25 on amazon are the very same.
So let me show you how they stack up against
the L Gotto cam link which is about 100 bucks
if they're actually worth their money for 20 or 25 bucks and how you can get the best
quality picture out of a generic capture card like
this because in the end they're all the same.
They might look different the inside is the same
and they produce a very different picture than you
would get from $100 capture card from Delgado.
So let's see how they stack up against the Delgado cam link,
what the picture quality looks like and how we can get the
best possible picture out of a $20 capture card as well.
So first image,
so what you're looking at currently is the USB C output of the Sony.
So I'm using a Sony a 74 and has a clean USB C outward which produces a stable 30
frames per second at full HD quality and the colors
over USB for this specific camera are really good.
Sometimes when you connect the camera over USB, the quality drops,
there's a variable frame rate and the colors are really compressed as well.
But for this specific model, I think it's a very fair comparison.
So let's see how to use B. C.
Off the Sony camera stacks up against the cam link.
So I'm gonna switch to the cam link now.
So this is the Sony picture and this is the cam
link and as you can see the colors are almost identical.
Both of them look really sharp. There's a nice contrast in the picture.
There's almost no compression visible on the on the on the picture.
Of course I'm uploading this video to Youtube so
it's hard to actually compare it side by side.
But I think it's fair to say that the quality of
both of these outputs is about is about the same.
So the Delgado gambling produces a really really nice image.
Now let's look at how these compare against all of the other
capture cards because we just concluded that they're basically the same.
So this is a generic capture card.
And one of the things that you instantly see if you compare it against the U. S. B. C.
Of the Sony
is that the picture of the generic capture card is much more saturated.
So you see the red on the image just instantly pop,
there's a little bit more compression and you see like
the white of my shirt is slightly compressed as well.
So there's a little bit less color on my shirt
but generally I would say it's a fair picture.
There is a stable 30 frames per second coming out of the
camera and I think it looks really decent for 20 bucks.
Right?
So we're talking about a $20 USB C device that supports four K
video that you can use to connect any camera console to your Mac.
And I think it's very decent but let's try
to tweak the camera settings a little bit to see
if we can get better quality out of the same
and how it then stacks up against the gambling.
So what I did is actually tweak the color settings on my camera a tiny bit.
So we're still looking at two cameras, two of the same Sony's,
but one of the devices now actually has minus four saturation.
So almost every camera that has HD my or clean HD my output
has some settings to change the saturation of your image or
to update the color profile and I now will be comparing it
against the other camera which has the standard settings which is connected
to the cam link four K and is out putting U.
S. B C.
So we're looking at currently is the USB C
output of camera one which has standard color settings.
Then there's the gambling four K, which has a really nice color profile.
Again, I just, every time that I look at, I think
this is good.
Um and then there's the generic capture card and as you
can see the colors are way more toned down now,
it doesn't look nearly as bad as before.
I tweak these settings.
So let me actually make a comparison
between the standard picture profile of the Sony
to a generic capture card and compared it against the slightly
tweaked picture profile of the Sony to also generic capture card.
So you can see how much of a difference this
makes when you use one of these generic cards,
if you just tweak the color settings a little bit.
So the picture that you're looking at right now is the original,
it has a neutral saturation so it's zero.
And then I changed the color profile on the second camera to be minus four.
And if you look at the saturation of my
picture now over this generic $20 capture card,
it actually looks pretty solid.
Right? So comparing against the Sony? So this is the Sony picture, use B. C. Out
directly to my Mac. And this is the picture of recapture card.
So I think with just a few tweaks in the color settings of your camera.
These generic capture cards which are all roughly the same.
They're all about 20 bucks are actually a really good affordable
option if you want to connect any device to your Mac.
So I would highly recommend this especially because they also have USB C.
You can connect them directly to your Mac. You don't need any Donald's
and it will save you about 80 bucks on the Al Gatto
if you have money to spare.
I do think that the Delgado cam link is the gold standard so it comes to the price.
It has used be a,
which I think is a slight disappointment and
with just some tweaks to your camera settings,
you actually get almost an equal picture out of these generate cards.
It requires you to dive into the camera settings,
but you already have to do that to tweak the H.
D. M. I. And to make sure that you run at 30 frames per second.
So I think they're actually a great option.
